Maine!

Doug is on the coast of Maine, near Rockford, making his way north to Bar Harbor. He has 1.5 days left of his trip across the country. Camping prices are much higher in the East than out West. We often camped for free in the West. An expensive night was $8.00. The past two nights the private RV campgrounds wanted $47 and $41 for a tent site. Last night he shared a space with a couple on a tandem and tonight he told the owner he had a very small tent and he would be gone by 7 a.m. He settled for $20. At least they had a pool. He reports the roads are very hilly with lots of traffic. He plans to ride to Ellsworth, tomorrow. His brother, Kenny wants to ride into Bar Harbor with him on Wednesday. We're very proud of him, and glad he gets to spend time with his family at the end.

NY to Vermont

After a late start, 10:30 a.m. due to heavy rain, Doug left the dry cabin and George and Allegra behind to pedal through more humidity and hills. He met a local cyclist (a doctor from Virgina) who asked if he wanted a Gatorade. Doug said "sure" and he took him to his cabin on Blue Mountain Lake. They went for a swim in the lake and Doug had a nice break. He continued on to a state park near Newcomb on Lake Harris where he camped and swam again. It was an 85 mile day. He awoke to a wonderful less humid day. He biked to Ticonderoga, NY and took a small ferry across Lake Champlain into Vermont. He pedaled through Middlebury College campus (we had visited there with Rita on our college tours). It was the most beautiful campus! He hoped to get 20 more miles in before stopping for the night...out of cell phone range. What did we do before cell phones??
Doug called with an update...He made it to Hancock, VT last night. Asked people if there was a place to camp. They said no, but directed him to a home where a woman rents rooms to hikers/bikers. He went there and was told they were full. He told the woman he had biked 90 miles and really didn't want to go any further. She said he could sleep on the porch if he wanted and she didn't charge him! He was able to use the bathroom and kitchen facilities and eat with the hikers.
He said the roads have been terrible! Patches upon patches, very rough. He had road construction on the big hill out of Middlebury, which was dirt/gravel.
Today he hopes to get to North Woodstock, VT.
He reported feeling tired, but doing well. He hopes to be in Bar Harbor by Wednesday.

riding solo

Doug is on his own for the last stretch. Yesterday, Jeff rode to his home in New York state, Don, Joe and Andrew headed towards New Hampshire and Portland, ME. Doug is continuing to follow the Northern Tier Route to Bar Harbor, ME. Today he rode 115 miles, in the heat, to Old Forge, NY. He is staying at the camp of the Smiths. Allegra is a college friend to Colleen. She and her dad, George are kindly taking care of him for a much needed rest day. He hasn't had a rest day since they left home July 20.
He said he met several other riders on the road today...they hadn't seen any others for a couple of weeks. The other riders couldn't believe how light Doug was traveling. He was able to fit every thing in two rear panniers.
